Message From Our Educator 4/30/08

Or Tzedek is a program for teens which is under the auspices of the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs. One of their programs is a summer social justice program for teens entering 10th - 12 grade. Students spend a week with 19 other teens in an experiential summer program that will strengthen their Jewish identity and clarify their commitment to social and economic justice.

They will:

Work in Chicago’s diverse communities
Explore Jewish approaches to social justice
Develop leadership skills
Earn dozens of service-learning hours and enhance their college applications
Examine urban issues and their impact
Live in Chicago and enjoy the city in the summer!

I would like to highlight our first-grade teachers this time. Robin Lucansky has been on our staff for four years. During the week she teaches 3rd and 4th grade in Alsip. She loves doing anything that can be done outdoors. Seth Hurwitz worked with her first semester. Seth is now in Israel on EIE for the semester. He is a junior at Naperville North where he plays hockey. Will Forbes also helps Robin. He is an aide to one of the students. Will is a junior at Willowbrook High and enjoys playing guitar in his free time. Michelle Kohl is in her first year on our staff, but has been a public school teacher for many years. She has two children and is expecting her third this summer. Ben Weiskopf assists Michelle. He is a senior at Glenbard West and will be attending Eckerd College in the fall. Ben is a wrestler and rugby player. Sarah Peck and Rachel Beiersdorf are co-teaching our third class. Both worked with other teachers last year and have their own class this year. Sarah is a senior at Wheaton Warrenville South where she plays lacrosse. She is going to Purdue next year. Rachel is a senior at Wheaton North High school where she is involved in the League of Voters. She will be attending Roosevelt University in the fall.
