Message From our Educator 10/22/08

Every year we send large numbers of students to OSRUI. This coming year we will have more young adults on staff than we have ever had. We will have about 15 people who will be either Avodah (the work corps for students entering their senior year of high school), Machon (counselor in training program) or madrikh/madrikah (staff).

We have a number of students who have earned their five year shirts, meaning they have been campers for at least five years. Below are a few comments from students who were at camp last summer:

I liked Shabbat because I liked the food, the part we got to see the kids at the camp and the singing session after dinner and I liked having sleepovers with your friends every night. Katie, Kallah

OSRUI was fun. I got to play tetherball, basketball and knockout. We all got to yell "girls in the horseshoe" when they would enter the horseshoe, the area where the Kallah boys cabins are. The food was good and we got to eat lunch early because we got to set up the tables for lunch. I hope I get to do toranute again this next year. I got to sleep in a cabin with my friends and I met many new people. -- Isaac, Kallah

Calling all musicians, dancers, actors and artists!! Have you been worried that you won't be able to practice your talents when you go to OSRUI? Worry no longer because there is Tiferet, the program for the arts. Everyday you get to do studio, the art that you signed up for. Towards the end of camp you put on a talent show called the Misebah. Every year there is a different theme and you, as a member of Tiferet, are the only who knows the theme. My favorite part about camp is Shabbat Shira. It happens every Friday night. It is when the whole camp congregates into Port Hall. It gets very crowded, you sing many songs and at the end Jerry Kaye (aka "Uncle Jerry") tells a story. It is where the whole camp becomes one. Last year, one day, our counselors surprised us by getting us large muffins when we got stuck in the bike shed during a big thunderstorm. I wish I had my camera then because the clouds were spectacular. Asher, Tiferet

Camp this summer was awesome. Mosh was really fun. It was great to take so many trips with my friends. My favorite trip was rock climbing, where we went bouldering. The 90-mile bike ride was fun too. Brandon, Mosh

OSRUI was so fun. I loved the swing-by-choice, where your friends pull you up on a rope as far as you want to go and then let you swing. I also got to be in the camp talent show with my friends. Audrey, Kallah

“I like the counselors because they are nice and they are someone to talk to. I also think the food is good, and life-lasting friendships.” Brendan, Tzofim

I liked the " tower", zip line, and the food!! I liked going to the water parks ( because the lake was closed) , but especially likes camp because of the friends I have made! Courtney, Kallah

My favorite thing about camp is sleeping in tents because tents are "downstairs" and have lots of frogs. I like to go to camp because you can swim in the lake everyday. Jacob, Tzofim

My favorite part about camp is meeting new people and seeing Jewish friends that I don't see everyday. At camp, we have so much in common, so we all get along. It has been fun this year for me because we have traveled to each others' bar and bat mitzvahs, since we have known each other for so long, 5 or so years. Hannah, Tiferet

My favorite part of camp is all the friends I make and all the counselors, I just have so much fun there. Danna, Gesher

OSRUI was wonderful. I had so much fun it was one of the best places ever! My favorite part was when we saw the fireworks on Fourth of July. It was sad to leave OSRUI and I'm going back!! Noah, Tzofim

On Sunday, November 2nd parents will have an opportunity to meet with Susan Alexander, associate director of OSRUI. She will show the camp video and answer any questions you may have about camp. All students in 3rd – 7th grade will have an opportunity to view the video and experience a little taste of camp.
