Being in choir could be compared to being in a musical. The next act doesn’t take place if you’re not there and prepared to help us advance the action. The Adult Choir leads our congregation in music and song for High Holiday services as well as most Friday night services. We have no small parts to play! At every rehearsal we try to find a new perspective on the music in order to bring something fresh again to the congregation. None of us is the same from week to week, and neither is the music. There is always something slightly new and interesting to consider and share with the congregation.

Most choir rehearsals take place on Tuesday and Thursday nights. I look forward to talking with you about choir and our music at Etz Chaim, and your special part in advancing the action.  Sim Shalom Video

About Greg Zelman:  After studying piano for many years with Madam Courte and Mr. Mischa Cutler of the Detroit Symphony, Greg completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. After graduation, he continued to explore music as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Warsaw. With a job working as an accompanist for the Warsaw Opera House director, Michal Szopski, Greg met his future wife, Margo Szopska, Michal's daughter. Several years of living in Warsaw were followed by a long and winding journey to the United States and relocation in the Midwest. Eventually, he found his way to Etz Chaim as director of the choir and soloists, while also working “various gigs” in a local university and public schools, some of which involved providing music, it seemed, “for every church between here and Lake Michigan!” One of the most interesting side gigs was working for a physician and composer-in-residence from Woodstock on his original Oratorio about the U.S. Civil War which took about four years to finish editing.
