Selichot
On a Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah, we begin to recite the prayers of repentance. The Selichot service is the only Jewish worship experience which takes place in the middle of the night. To emphasize the holiness of the moment and the humility with which we approach God, we do not use the electric lights to illuminate the sanctuary. Rather, we conduct the service by candlelight. The service is an overture for the High Holiday liturgy. We say and sing the words and melodies which form the prayers of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
Our evening begins at 9:30 PM with Havdalah followed by the study program. This year's study session will include screening excerpts from the film "Dim Sum Funeral" followed by a text study and discussion about the meaning of Teshuvah, (Repentance), forgiveness and family harmony. Join Rabbi Cosnowsky and Rabbi Bob as we usher in the High Holiday season with our traditional study session, followed by a candle lit service and hearing the first sound of the Shofar blowing. Don't miss this exciting opportunity for self reflection and community study while we begin the 5771 High Holiday season. At 11:00 PM we share a social hour followed by the service at 11:30 PM.
