Wheaton Torah Shabbat Friday February 16
Our service on Friday evening February 16th will focus on the Wheaton College Torah scroll which resides in our Ark. Rabbi Bob will read from this very old scroll. Professor Richard Gibson of the Wheaton Faculty will speak about his work on the book as object and his students’ encounter with the Torah scroll.
In the fall of 2016 we placed in our Ark a Torah scroll belonging to Wheaton College. Wheaton College had received a donation of an old Torah scroll. The leadership of Wheaton College understood that this Torah scroll was not a historic artifact to be placed in a rare book collection but rather a sacred object. Dr. Phillip Ryken and Rabbi Steven Bob created this plan for the college's Torah scroll to reside in the Ark of our congregation. The leadership of the college and the congregation embraced the plan. This ongoing act of cooperation and mutual trust between Wheaton College and Congregation Etz Chaim expresses the strength of the weave of our interfaith community
